Myers Park and Cardinal Gibbons Claim NCHSAA 4A Swimming & Diving Titles
CARY, N.C. – The Myers Park Mustangs secured their fourth consecutive NCHSAA 4A Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship on Thursday at the Triangle Aquatic Center. In the men’s competition, the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders clinched their first team title since 2013.
Myers Park edged out Green Hope, scoring 260 points to Green Hope’s 254.5. This marks the Mustangs' fifth overall title, their first dating back to 1976. Key performances included Karina Plaza, Mary Drummond, Avery Klamfoth, and Katherin Guenther winning the 400-yard Freestyle Relay (3:23.39), while Plaza and Klamfoth teamed with Emma Richardson and Taylor Weaver to claim first in the 200-yard Medley Relay, setting a new state record.
Green Hope’s Sloane Whelehan shined, winning the 200-yard Freestyle and anchoring the first-place 200-yard Freestyle Relay. She also took the 50-yard Freestyle title, earning Most Outstanding Swimmer honors. In diving, Charlotte Catholic’s Reagan Leckner won with a score of 443.35, with East Chapel Hill’s Laila Kwong finishing second.
On the men’s side, Cardinal Gibbons amassed 241 points to secure the championship, their first 4A title after winning six straight from 2008-2013 in lower classifications. Strong depth propelled their victory, with Carter Lange (third, 50-yard Freestyle), Liam Drake (third, 500-yard Freestyle), and the 200-yard Medley Relay team (third place).
Enloe placed second overall, one point ahead of third-place Marvin Ridge. Enloe seniors Ian Stutts and Alex Townsend finished 1-2 in the 200-yard IM, both surpassing last year’s 4A record. Stutts retained the record with a 1:46.26 finish.
Marvin Ridge’s Michael Rice starred, winning the 100-yard Freestyle in a record-setting 43.56 and finishing second in the 50-yard Freestyle. He also swam on the winning 400-yard Freestyle Relay team and was named Most Outstanding Swimmer.
In diving, Charlotte Catholic’s Mason Kramer took first place (455.20), while defending champion Jacob Pollina of Northern Guilford finished second.
